Richard Leff, M.D.
For the past 10 years I have been an independent consultant in rheumatology and biopharmaceutical clinical development. In my chosen profession of developing new drugs, prior to that I had 15 years of leading and managing teams in the international clinical development of novel pharmaceutical compounds for the treatment of rheumatologic (mainly arthritis) and other diseases, in the US and around the world. I have worked with other, external groups, such as the NIH Osteoarthritis Initiative Consortium, OMERACT, IMMPACT, and the OARSI FDA Osteoarthritis Guidelines Initiative. I have also served as the pharmaceutical industry representative on FDA advisory committees on Arthritis and on Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products.
After my rheumatology fellowship, I was a faculty member for 3 years at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina in the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology, and was the Chief, Section of Rheumatology, VAMC-Charleston, SC (I was the only Rheumatologist at the VA). During my fellowship at National Institutes of Health, NIAMS, Arthritis and Rheumatism Branch, mainly in the laboratory of Paul Plotz working on myositis and was involved with the care of patients with myositis and lupus nephritis.
