Episode 2: Managing Your Care Starts With You

Power of short duration exercise with Blood flow restriction (BFR)

In our second episode in the Managing Your Care Starts with You series, Brett Burton, PT, DPT, SCS, ATC, CSCS, Founder of Somavive and Proactive Performance Coach joined us to explain the technique of blood flow restriction, demonstrate how it can be used by myositis patients to improve/maintain muscle strength and to answer your questions.

Through a digital wellness program, Brett has guided over 60 clients worldwide with myositis in use of effective use of BFR. While using self-performance testing to track long-term outcomes, the majority of his clients have experienced improvement or maintenance of strength. The BFR Guided Training Program uses short duration exercise as a springboard to develop sustainable long-term wellness habits.

When starting any exercise program, please consult your physician prior to starting BFR. Nothing shared in this webinar is medical advice.

Brett Burton, PT, DPT, SCS, ATC, CSCS

With an extensive background in physical therapy, sports medicine and performance, Brett has had the opportunity to work with international leaders in the health and fitness space. Licensed in Physical Therapy, a Certified Athletic Trainer, a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy and a B Strong Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training Instructor, Brett is on a mission to revolutionize the health and fitness experience for people from all walks of life.

Brett attended the University of Nebraska, where he attained his Bachelor of Science in Education and Human Sciences with a major in Athletic Training. He then went on to achieve his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Upon completing his Doctorate, Brett took up a position as a Physical Therapy Sports Resident at St. Luke’s Health System, where he was introduced to blood flow restriction (BFR) and grew into a staff therapist. He later transitioned to EXOS in Phoenix, Arizona and worked closely with athletes and corporate wellness clients, serving on an interdisciplinary team with an emphasis on mindset, nutrition, movement and recovery.

In 2018, he went on to study under Dr. Jim Stray-Gundersen, who had personally studied under Dr. Yoshiaki Sato, the Japanese inventor of BFR. Brett set out to launch One Harmonic Motion to teach health and fitness professionals how to integrate BFR into their offering. He was ready to launch his brand in 2018 when he was diagnosed with cancer.

His cancer experience had unlocked a deeper understanding of the human body. By using his formal education, he was able to start laying the foundations of what is now known as ongoing proactive performance.

About Salman Bhai, M.D., MSU Medical Advisor

Dr. Salman Bhai, Neurology, UT Southwestern

Dr. Salman Bhai is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurotherapeutics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Faculty Member at the Institute of Exercise and Environmental Medicine (IEEM) at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. He earned his B.S. in mathematics at Duke University and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School, where he earned multiple research grants. He completed his internship, neurology residency, and neuromuscular fellowship at Harvard: internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and residency and fellowship in a joint program between Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is grateful for the unique neuromuscular mentorship, training under several neuromuscular experts including Drs. Anthony Amato and Steven Greenberg (Brigham and Women’s Hospital) and Drs. William David, Amanda Guidon, and Reza Seyedsadjadi (Massachusetts General Hospital), amongst several others.

Dr. Bhai specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of neuromuscular disorders. He specifically focuses on patients with inflammatory and metabolic myopathies as well as those with immune checkpoint inhibitor complications.

His research focuses on understanding how muscles communicate with other organ systems, particularly when muscle is inflamed, like in myositis. The goal of his research is to better understand, diagnose, and treat patients with myositis. This will be achieved through exercise and muscle physiology studies of myositis patients by analyzing biospecimens for molecular perturbations. He also will offer clinical trials for myositis patients.

Dr. Bhai is dedicated to helping patients and their families understand and navigate difficult conditions by providing world-class clinical care.

What is our Managing Your Care Starts with YOU series?

In this new and ongoing series, we will explore how doctors today are taking a patient-centered approach to manage the care of our diverse myositis community. We often hear terms like patient-centered care, patient-centered research, patient-centered outcomes, but what does this really mean for you and the myositis community, for research and drug development, and most importantly, for your care?

Some topics we will cover in future episodes with Dr. Bhai, his colleagues, other myositis specialists, and special guests will tackle such care topics as:

  • When You are at Risk – Care strategies on different topics -cancer screening, dysphagia, ILD, emotional health, underserved myositis communities
  • Managing Your Care Team
  • The Rollercoaster of Flares
  • The Pain is Real – a review of MSU’s 2019 survey of over 450 patients on Pain and Opioids, what current research is telling us about pain, and current thinking on treating pain, real-life strategies
  • The Alphabet Soup of Myositis Antibodies – what are they and what do they tell us about managing our care
